AGU to Announce New Statement on Climate Change

At a press conference next week, the world's largest scientific society of Earth and space scientists—the American Geophysical Union, or AGU—will release a new statement on climate change: the evidence for it, potential consequences from it, and how to respond to it. The statement is the first revision since 2003 of the climate-change position of the AGU, which has a membership of 50,000 researchers, teachers, and students in 137 countries.

Where:   American Geophysical Union (AGU) Building, 2000 Florida Avenue, Washington, D.C. (half block from the intersection of Florida Ave. and Connecticut Ave.), Terrace Room – (on first floor) (Refreshments served.)

When:   Thursday, 24 January 2008, 10:00 am, EST

Bette L. Otto-Bliesner, Senior Scientist, NCAR Climate and Global Dynamics Division, lead author of a chapter of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report, member of the AGU committee that drafted the new statement.

The Council of the American Geophysical Union adopted the new position statement, entitled “Human Impacts on Climate,” at its meeting in San Francisco, California last month. This statement replaces an earlier statement with the same title, adopted in December 2003, and still available on the AGU web site at http://www.agu.org/sci_soc/policy/positions/climate_change.shtml

The text of the new statement will be distributed at the press conference and, at the same time, posted to the AGU web site and transmitted by e-mail to the AGU press release distribution list. It will not be available prior to the press conference.
