Across short and long timescales, tectonic processes play a major role in determining Earth’s climate. This session seeks to highlight Earth science research that explores feedbacks between tectonic processes and both global and regional climate. The session's focus includes climate impacts arising both from horizontal plate motions as well as vertical displacements from processes such as mountain-building and dynamic topography. Such impacts include, but are not limited to: the role of uplift in modifying precipitation through orographic effects, monsoon dynamics and the pathway of jet streams; the importance of oceanic gateways in modifying thermal gradients and the cryosphere; and the role of paleogeography in setting Earth’s long-term carbon cycle.
