Lecture Instructional
Earth scientists can often feel deep senses of responsibility, fear, and loss while studying climate change. Pressures to publish juxtaposed with the reality of their work can be emotionally draining, especially with few motivating incentives.
As we peer into the next centennial, scientists must balance a desire for recognition of their contributions, the importance of open science, and chronic exposure to the terrible risks climate change poses to their own families, communities, and home planet. Facing varied reactions from the public and decision makers, and the difficult task of convincing key actors to make Earth-saving decisions, puts additional pressures on our community.
We must find new ways to support the well-being of earth scientists. This session will explore methods of recognizing scientific excellence beyond just publication, the cultural barriers to putting science into action, and the importance of peer communities in reducing stigma and fostering an environment of mutual support.
