Lecture Instructional
Over the last century, the geosciences have trailed other STEM fields in the recruitment, retention, and inclusion of a diverse workforce. Some gains (i.e. participation of white women in geoscience PhD programs) have not led to equity at all career stages nor to increased participation by members of other underrepresented groups (URGs), especially people of color. Multiple structural, institutional, and cultural barriers continue to restrict participation in geoscience by members of URGs.
In the next century, the need for highly skilled geoscience professionals will outpace supply if the geoscience workforce does not reflect national demographics. Meeting this need requires bold, visionary efforts to change institutional climates, remove barriers to participation, and prioritize the inclusion of scientists who have largely been excluded during the last century. This session will highlight leadership, innovation, and solutions that are changing the landscape of geosciences to promote and encourage diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and equity.
