Travel Information
The island is served by two major airports that offer multiple domestic and international flights daily; Kona International Airport (KOA) and Hilo International Airport (ITO). Many flights into both Hilo will originate as inter-island flights from Oahu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
Kona International Airport (KOA), officially named Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport, is the primary airport on the Island of Hawai’i. It is located on the western side of the island approximately 80 miles from the Grand Naniloa Hotel. If flying into KOA, you should plan on renting a car for the one-and-a-half-hour drive across the island.
Hilo International Airport (ITO) is located approximately 3 miles from the Grand Naniloa Hotel. To get from Hilo Airport to the Grand Naniloa you can take a taxi, schedule a rideshare, or rent a car. Travel time from the airport to the Grand Naniloa is approximately 10-15 minutes.
February is a beautiful time of year to visit Hilo. The average high temperature throughout February is about 26 C (79 F). Daily low temperatures are around 18C (64F). Be sure to check the weather when you are packing.
We recommend that international participants apply for visas three months prior to the conference (roughly 1 November 2024). Some consulates may have delays in scheduling visa interviews. We encourage you to first contact the consulate to determine the wait time for an interview. If you require a letter of invitation before submitting an abstract or you will not be submitting an abstract, you must request one via email. After submitting an abstract, you can automatically generate a letter of invitation through the abstract submission system.

Field Trips
Mid-Conference Field Trip: Recent Volcanism at Kīlauea Volcano - Wednesday, 12 February 2025
The one-day mid-conference trip will provide an overview of Kīlauea volcano, the most active volcano of the Hawaiian Chain (last erupted in 2024). This overview will highlight major features of Hawai‘i’s most active volcano, including its volcanotectonic setting, the last ~500 years or caldera-rift eruptions, 20th century eruptions, and the lead up to the climatic 2018 events, in addition to the last four years of summit activity. The field trip will emphasize the intimate magmatic plumbing connections between summit and rift zone and the intricate complexities scientists face in understanding a shield volcano where eruptions can be initiated subaerially over distances > 70 km.
Difficulty: Moderate Exertion/Strenuous. There are two main hikes currently planned during the day. One is about 2 miles roundtrip (3.2 km) mostly on paved road (Crater Rim Drive), the other is on a trail (Mauna Ulu) and more uneven terrain 1.2 miles (~2 km). Other potential small hikes include the Nahuku lava tube (< 0.6 mi or 1km round trip).
Field trip duration: This is an all-day field trip. The group will depart from the Grand Naniloa Hotel at 7:00am and return around 6:30pm.
What to bring: It is likely to be sunny or rainy or both! Please bring sunscreen, hats, raincoats, lots of water, and good hiking shoes. Binoculars can come in handy to see any volcanic activity in the summit caldera if we’re lucky. It can be chilly at the summit, sometimes foggy or rainy, so a sweater and/or windbreaker in addition to your raincoat is a good idea. We cannot bring hammers within the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park, where sampling is not permitted. Feel encouraged, however, to bring your hand lens!
What to expect: We will be doing some hiking mostly along roads as well as trails, perhaps a little on lava surfaces. Expect to walk a decent amount. Weather that can alternate between sunny and heavy rain, we often get both on the same day. You will be split into several groups of ~20-30 with two organizers each.
Dietary restrictions: Lunch will be provided. You will be able to provide any dietary restrictions when you register for the meeting.
Field Guide: A field guide will be provided as a .pdf shortly before the conference. Color printed, bound versions of the field guides will be available at a cost of $10/guide.
Optional Post-Conference 1-day field trip: Impacts of the 2018 Lower East Rift Zone Eruption of Kīlauea - Saturday, 15 February 2025
This single day post-conference field trip provides a unique opportunity to learn about the sequence of events that transpired between May and August 2018, and to link summit processes discussed in the mid conference field trip (e.g. Kilauea’s caldera collapse) to an eruption that occurred ~40 km away on the lower East Rift Zone. The > 1km3 of lava erupted along > 20 fissure segments had vast impacts on the Hawaiian landscape and population, partially or completely destroying several towns and communities. The field trip involves stops at key locations across the 2018 flow field, and will allow participants to gain a more holistic view of the complex magmatic and surface processes that occurred at Kilauea during this historical eruption as well as its societal impacts.
Difficulty: Minor to Moderate Exertion. Most stops will not involve significant walking or hiking. Depending on conditions, we may walk up portions of trails and small distances on irregular lava flows.
Date/time of departure: 7:30am on Saturday Feb 15th in Hilo (Island of Hawai’i). The group will likely depart from the Grand Naniloa Hotel.
Date/time of return: Around 6:00-6:30pm the same day.
Contact person: Tom Shea ([email protected])
Cost and Sign up: $74.80/person. IMPORTANT: Space for this field trip is unfortunately limited to the first 50 participants to sign up. To ensure that you can get a spot, you will be asked to make payment (paypal or venmo) during the signup process (within 48h hours of expressing interest).
Lunch and snacks: Provided.
