Join us for a Congressional Visits Day

Congressional Visits Day

Each year, AGU sponsors Congressional Visits Days (CVDs), which gives our members the opportunity to meet with policymakers, traditionally in Washington, D.C., but now virtually. Attendees participate in a workshop with AGU staff, or a webinar for districts visits, before meeting with members of Congress or their staff to discuss the importance of federally funded scientific research.

If you are interested in learning about any of these events, contact us for more information or use our toolkit to learn about meeting with your member of Congress

In-Person Congressional Visits Days

AGU24 Congressional Visits Days (9-13 December 2024)

Learn More About AGU24 Congressional Visit Days

Learn more about participating in the AGU24 Congressional Visits Days event. Registering is quick and easy and will give you access to relevant information and skill-building resources.

AGU24 Congressional Visits Days is a free event for interested AGU24 attendees with any level of experience. However, due to its focus on U.S. policy engagement, participation in this event is limited to individuals based in the U.S.

  • All scientists—even those who work for federal agencies or state-funded institutions—are entitled to engage their federal legislators. Participants in this event will be engaging their legislators as constituents, NOT as representatives of their work or institutions.
  • However, if your institution is paying for your attendance at AGU24, we strongly encourage you to contact your institution’s government relations or ethics department about your ability to participate in this event before registering.
  • For more information about federal anti-lobbying rules, check out the Pocket Guide for Scientists: Engaging with Legislators on Behalf of Science from the Climate Science Legal Defense Fund.

Participants will gain first-hand science policy skills by engaging with their elected officials. Getting exclusive time with your legislators or their staff will allow you the opportunity to explain why an issue is important to you, your science, and your community. The event is also an opportunity to meet other scientists with an interest in science policy.

Congressional meetings will take place in Washington, DC on Capitol Hill.

Participants will be grouped according to their geographic constituency. AGU’s policy staff will assign a Team Lead for each group, who will be responsible for scheduling their group’s meeting(s).

All registered participants will be emailed resources to help make their meetings a success—from information on researching your members of Congress, to guidance on crafting clear and effective messaging, and more. AGU’s policy staff will also be available to provide support during designated office hours throughout the week of AGU24.

Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a handout to share with congressional staff. Suitable handouts might include a one-pager about your institution and research or a policy-related paper appropriate for non-science audiences. AGU’s policy staff can assist you in selecting the right document for your meeting.
  • AGU Congressional Visits Days bring together scientists and educators from across geosciences disciplines to share the wonder and value of Earth and space science with key legislators.
  • With a district visit, you can also show your legislators the value of your science during congressional recesses when your policymakers are home in your district. AGU hosts a summer webinar to help you prepare for district visits.
  • Every year, AGU co-sponsors Geoscience Congressional Visits Day. Join AGU and other Earth and space science societies as we meet with congressional offices to share critical geoscience information. This event allows ESS scientists to build relationships with policymakers to advance science.
