2024 AGU ELECTIONS

Vasco Mantas

Informatics

Secretary

Bio

Research Scientist, University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal

AGU embraces the global community and welcomes leaders representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and anything else you feel comfortable sharing.

My life and professional experiences have allowed me to engage with people and organizations across various countries and regions. I bring a commitment to inclusivity, with a focus on promoting diverse identities within AGU and ample representation from around the world and the active participation of Early Career scientists (like myself) in the decision-making process. I firmly believe in expanding representation to include a wide array of nationalities (myself being Portuguese), regional perspectives, and racial and ethnic backgrounds. We need dialogue rooted in science, to enable bridging different identities and perspectives effectively. By ensuring diverse voices are heard and valued, I aim to contribute meaningfully to AGU’s global vision and global mission.

Volunteer experience that relates to this position:

Chair of the AGU Informatics Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program Country Coordinator. Co-lead of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Mentorship Program. Founder of the Watersheds Online Platform.

Q&A

As one of the elected leaders of your section, how will you partner with your president, president-elect, other leaders, and staff to communicate with and engage your members to achieve AGU’s vision, values, mission, and goals?

As a Secretary, I will partner with the president, president-elect, other leaders, and AGU staff to effectively communicate with and engage our members, aligning with AGU’s vision, values, mission, and goals. AGU has a global mission as a leader in the Earth Sciences, requiring us to actively listen to our community’s concerns and aspirations, and adapt to rapid societal changes. By prioritizing member feedback, we can successfully implement AGU’s strategic plan and reinforce our role in the Informatics domain and beyond.

To facilitate open communication, I will hold biweekly office hours for all members, ensuring transparency in decisions and conveying their concerns and suggestions to the section leadership. I will collaborate with section officials and AGU to identify funding sources to support critical activities needed to increase our section’s reach and impact.

I will also initiate an informal working group with other Secretaries to identify synergies across sections, reducing redundancy and amplifying best practices. We will organize monthly seminars on topics of interest to our community, offer trainings for students and Early Career scientists, and champion equitable access to resources in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Additionally, I will work with members to develop resources communicating the role and relevance of our section and our member’s activities. These will be shared with public and private organizations, both in the U.S. and internationally, to create opportunities for our members and support global communities. I am committed to ensuring diverse perspectives, visions, and identities are represented, involved, and elevated in our section.
