Secretary
Bio
Associate Professor, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA, USA
AGU embraces the global community and welcomes leaders representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and anything else you feel comfortable sharing.
I am a mid-career white woman at a large public research university in a majority-minority city in a small state that is particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change.
Volunteer experience that relates to this position:
I most recently served as a co-leader of the Stress and Deformation Over Time group on the Science Planning Committee of the Southern California Earthquake Center. I have previously served on the nominations committee for the UNAVCO Board of Directors.
Q&A
As one of the elected leaders of your section, how will you partner with your president, president-elect, other leaders, and staff to communicate with and engage your members to achieve AGU’s vision, values, mission, and goals?
It is reasonable to ask, What is the role of an AGU section in the modern science collaboration? I see AGU sections as best positioned to encourage and develop the scientific workforce at all career stages, from students first considering entering geodesy to senior researchers earning well-deserved recognitions. The Geodesy section has done this well, and as Secretary I would continue to support the highly successful AGU Geodesy Early Career Webinars. I would work with AGU leadership to encourage and develop quality sessions at quality meetings, emphasizing both technical innovations and practical implications for societal challenges. I would encourage AGU Geodesy to support innovative education efforts to develop the next generation of geodesists, including scientists who both develop and use deformation products. From a practical standpoint, all organizations benefit from team leaders who are diligent, organized, detail oriented, and expeditious. If elected, I intend to equitably share the work of all group tasks with my fellow section leaders, and perform the specific duties of Secretary with competence and efficiency. Finally, in order for science to flourish, scientists must consistently engage in ethical and inclusive behavior across all levels and in all aspects of their work. I applaud AGU’s stated commitment to these principles, and cheerfully commit to living them out in my own scientific practice and encouraging others to do likewise.
