AGU embraces the global community and welcomes leaders representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and anything else you feel comfortable sharing.
AGU encourages representations from different geographic regions and cultural backgrounds to ensure that global perspectives are heard. I believe I would help further AGU's global mission and goals for the following reasons:
1) Rich and Interdisciplinary Experience: My diverse educational and professional background spans fields such as geology, geochemistry, oceanography, urban air pollution, human health, and marine aerosol research. My research focuses on the frontier of Earth science.
2) Female Scientist Perspective: As a female full professor at Peking University, I can provide firsthand insights into the unique challenges and opportunities for women in science.
3) Open-minded Global Perspective: With 24 years of work experience since receiving my Ph.D. in 2000, I have collaborated with colleagues and students from different backgrounds, cultivating an open-minded and globally focused mindset that looks beyond local issues.
4) Passion for Supporting Young Scientists: From serving as a Scientific Steering Committee member in the International Global Atmospheric Chemistry (IGAC) to becoming the founder of the IGAC-China Young Working Group, this demonstrates my passion for supporting young scientists and my leadership in nurturing the next generation of scientists. I wish to contribute more service to young scientists at AGU in the future.
Volunteer experience that relates to this position:
My volunteer experience includes 1) serving as a member of AGU Meetings Committee in 2015, and having in-person meetings in AGU headquarters during my service, 2) serving as Scientific Steering Committee member of International Global Atmospheric Chemistry (IGAC) for six years as the only representative from China, and becoming the founder of IGAC-China Young Working Group in 2021, 3) becoming a member of International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS)-Chinese National Committee since 2020.
Q&A
AGU’s strategic plan recognizes our community is diverse and global, and calls for empowering broad and inclusive partnerships to help solve society’s most complex challenges. How will you foster and strengthen global relationships to further AGU’s values, vision, mission, and goals?
Over the years, AGU has made a great effort to connect with the global community and establish valuable partnerships with a wide range of related organizations through its strategic internationalization plan and a diverse leadership team. To further foster and strengthen these critical global relationships, I believe more creative ideas and well-crafted strategies will be the key drivers.
Some of the key approaches I would recommend include:
1) Identifying the right, strong local contacts and representative organizations in various regions. Having trusted and knowledgeable partners on the ground will be essential for ensuring effective global relationships.
2) Deeply understanding the needs and priorities of local communities and ensuring there is alignment between those needs and AGU's values, offerings, and capabilities.
3) Exploring mechanisms to maintain lasting, productive relationships, and open communication channels over the long-term. Continuity will be vital for sustaining global partnerships.
4) Strategically identifying regions and markets that hold the greatest potential for growth in terms of new partners and members. Proactively targeting these high-potential areas can help expand AGU's global footprint and impacts.
5) Taking advantage of digital technologies for global engagement and utilizing online platforms, social media, and virtual events to connect with a global audience. Organizing high-level seminars to reach international users, especially early-career scientists and students.
By focusing on the right relationships, understanding local needs, building lasting partnerships, and targeting high-growth regions, I believe that AGU can effectively advance its values, vision, and goals on a worldwide scale, and foster and strengthen global relationships.
