AGU embraces the global community and welcomes leaders representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and anything else you feel comfortable sharing.
I was born in China, migrated to the United States to study and work as a scientist, and then returned to China as a principal investigator. This journey exposed me to cultural shocks and the challenges of being new in diverse environments. Adapting to different languages, cuisines, and cultures broadened my worldview and strengthened my empathy. As an international student and researcher in the U.S., I greatly benefited from the diversity commitment of my mentors and colleagues. These experiences ingrained in me the importance of diversity and inclusion in research and teaching. Upon returning to China as a senior researcher, I realized how profoundly these experiences had reshaped me, providing diverse perspectives on work and life.
In academia, I bring a multifaceted perspective to AGU as a scientist deeply immersed in geophysics and physics. I am proud to represent an identity that bridges the realms of physics and geoscience, showcasing how interdisciplinary approaches drive scientific innovation. I believe the future of research and teaching is increasingly interconnected, interdisciplinary, and collaborative. This holistic approach ensures my contributions to AGU reflect a commitment to inclusivity, innovation, and the global advancement of geophysical sciences.
Volunteer experience that relates to this position:
I organized and chaired the Planetary Materials session in the 33rd International Union of Pure and Applied Physics Conference on Computational Physics. I have been a member of the American Physical Society for more than 10 years and reviewed articles for more than 20 journals.
Q&A
As one of the elected leaders of your section, how will you partner with your president, president-elect, other leaders, and staff to communicate with and engage your members to achieve AGU’s vision, values, mission, and goals?
As a section secretary, I will actively collaborate with the leaders and staff of our section to achieve AGU’s vision in the implementation of the strategic plan. I will establish effective communication channels to update members through newsletters, emails, and social media about AGU initiatives, events, and opportunities to ensure transparency and engagement. I will promote ideas, participate in, and organize events to facilitate discovery and solution-based science. I will develop and support international programs that foster member engagement, such as mentorship schemes, professional development workshops, and volunteer opportunities, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within our community. I will create feedback mechanisms to gather input from members and ensure their voices are heard and their needs are addressed, helping tailor our activities to better serve the community and advance AGU’s mission. Furthermore, I will establish and nurture partnerships with other organizations to address scientific and societal challenges collaboratively, working with educational institutions, government agencies, and industry partners to amplify our impact. By implementing these strategies, I hope to help foster a vibrant, inclusive, and collaborative community worldwide that advances AGU’s mission and contributes to the global scientific dialogue.
