2024 AGU ELECTIONS

Sanjiv Kumar

Global Environmental Change

Secretary

Bio

Associate Professor, Auburn University, Auburn, AL, USA

AGU embraces the global community and welcomes leaders representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and anything else you feel comfortable sharing.

As a candidate with a multidisciplinary background in research and education, I bring a rich and diverse perspective to the AGU community. My South Asian heritage enables me to represent and advocate for underrepresented voices, enriching our organization's global and multicultural fabric. I believe in fostering inclusiveness through structural changes, such as allowing self-nominations, enhancing transparency by opening meetings to interested parties via web conferencing and evaluating applications based on individual merit and community impact rather than traditional metrics. These initiatives will help create a more inclusive and vibrant AGU community where every member feels valued and rewarded for their contributions.

Volunteer experience that relates to this position:

I have extensive volunteer experience, including serving as the primary convener for multiple AGU Fall Meeting sessions and reviewing for AGU, American Meteorological Society, and Nature journals. I currently serve on the U.S. Climate Variability and Predictability Program's Panel and the National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research's Earth System Predictability Across Timescale Advisory Committee. Additionally, I coordinated the Outstanding Student Presentation Awards for the Global Environmental Change (GEC) section in Fall 2023 and held secretary and vice-chair positions for the American Society of Civil Engineers' Risk, Uncertainty, and Probabilistic Approaches Committee.

Q&A

  2. I will maintain open and healthy communication with all parties through email communications and regular updates.
  3. At the direction of the president/president-elect, I will attend the AGU Council meeting.
  4. In consultation with the president, president-elect, and other staff members, I will develop quarterly newsletters for the section.
  5. Attend and maintain minutes of the GEC section monthly meeting; share it with all parties involved.
  6. Propose and convene GEC-related sessions applicable to a wide audience.
  7. Continual improvement – based on members' feedback, I will implement strategies to improve my communication to better serve the GEC section and AGU’s goal.
