Bio

Science Communications Assistant Researcher, Kansas Geological Survey, Lawrence, KS, USA

AGU embraces the global community and welcomes leaders representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and anything else you feel comfortable sharing.

Scientific progress depends upon our success in communicating it to future generations. As an early-career geoscience student with experience in many scientific communication mediums (graphical, written, videographic, etc.), I represent the exact professional combination of age and expertise useful for determining the most effective methods for communicating science to new scientists.

Volunteer experience that relates to this position:

I have volunteered with AGU's Education section since 2021 as Newsletter Editor, and later took on the additional role of Webmaster. Every month, I compose the section's newsletter, and conduct website maintenance to keep our communication channels up-to-date.

Q&A

As one of the elected leaders of your section, how will you partner with your president, president-elect, other leaders, and staff to communicate with and engage your members to achieve AGU’s vision, values, mission, and goals?

I have volunteered with AGU's Education section since 2021 as Newsletter Editor and Webmaster. During my time with the section, I have managed both inter- and intra-section correspondence, created and implemented publishing schedules and deadlines, shared and publicized outreach and educational opportunities, organized and improved the accessibility of the section's website, and created multimedia to connect the section's identity and community. My notable deliverables include the section's monthly newsletters, an original Perspectives on Earth and Space Science Educational Research (PESSER) article, our current Section Identity video, various flyers to publicize events and opportunities, and the current Education section website structure.
In my professional capacity as a Science Communication Assistant Researcher at the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS), I have completed similar outreach projects, such as an Eos article detailing the 2023 Kansas Field Conference, a KU News press release, and educational videos designed to share geoscience with a broad audience.

I am an active, dedicated contributor to the Education section and its members, and the numerous communication projects I've completed both for AGU and the KGS are proof of my commitment to leading science communication and education. I have several years of experience collaborating with various AGU leaders and staff to share career development opportunities and educational content with our members, and I consistently work with our section leadership to develop new ways to inspire, educate and empower scientists at all career stages. For these reasons, I would make an excellent Education section Secretary.
