2024 AGU ELECTIONS
Claire Nichols
Geomagnetism, Paleomagnetism and Electromagnetism
Secretary
Bio
Associate Professor, University of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom
AGU embraces the global community and welcomes leaders representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and anything else you feel comfortable sharing.
The GPE section has a strong history of female leadership, and as a student and early career member of this community I have benefitted from many fantastic female role models. I hope to act as a role model and mentor for the upcoming generation within the GPE section. I am passionate about encouraging women and other minority groups in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) from high school through to faculty level. Other issues that shape my teaching and research are widening participation in the geosciences, particularly through inclusive fieldwork and ethical field sampling.
Volunteer experience that relates to this position:
Geomagnetism, Paleomagnetism and Electromagnetism (GPE) Early Career representative (2020 - present); AGU Fall Meeting Program Committee GPE representative (2022); Institute for Rock Magnetism Review and Advisory Committee (2023 - present); Mineral Physics Group (Mineralogical Society of Great Britain) committee member (2020 - present)
Q&A
As one of the elected leaders of your section, how will you partner with your president, president-elect, other leaders, and staff to communicate with and engage your members to achieve AGU’s vision, values, mission, and goals?
I will work with all members of the GPE committee to ensure we create an open and inclusive environment within the GPE section. When required, I will help facilitate events at the AGU Fall Meeting to bring members of our community together, help with the administration of travel grants to widen participation to the Fall Meeting, and communicate opportunities and initiatives to the community through the FluxLine newsletter, and our social media platforms.
