S. McKenzie Skiles
Cryosphere
President-Elect
Bio
Associate Professor, University of Utah , Salt Lake City, UT, USA
AGU embraces the global community and welcomes leaders representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and anything else you feel comfortable sharing.
As a women in a field that has traditionally been male dominated, and still broadly lacks diversity, I know that getting involved in leadership when you don't see others that look like you can be intimidating. I aim to lower hurdles to involvement and leadership by creating a welcoming environment and listening to all perspectives. I value the collaborative process of decision making, in both research and service, and different perspectives that accompany engagement of those from a variety of backgrounds and career stages will strengthen our section. I know the Cryosphere section is always striving to be more transparent, inclusive, and diverse, and I would look forward to advancing these objectives.
Volunteer experience that relates to this position:
I have served the AGU Cryosphere Sciences Executive Committee through various roles, starting as a student representative and more recent roles on the Program and Awards Committees. I have served my broader community through leadership roles on with the Snow International (SINTER) Executive Committee, including as President, and serving as Vice-President for International Commission on Snow and Ice Hydrology (ICSIH). I also serve on the Editorial Board for the European Geosciences Union 's The Cryosphere.
Q&A
This role aims to catalyze community and build AGU as envisioned by the strategic plan. This leadership position is a dual role - helping to advance AGU’s strategic plan as a member of Council and leading your section. How would you support the Board, staff and other sections to achieve AGU’s vision, values, mission, and goals? How will you engage with members of your section to execute AGU’s strategic plan?
I have found my involvement with AGU over the duration of my career, including presenting at the Annual Meetings, publishing in AGU journals, receiving awards, and being involved in the Cryosphere Sciences section, to be incredibly valuable. These opportunities should be accessible and available to all in Earth and Space Sciences, which is why I am committed to advancing AGU’s vision, values, mission, and goals. My experience has given me valuable insight in regards to AGU organizational goals, governance structure, and Annual Meeting planning that would serve me well were I to be elected. I will use this and other leadership experience to support the Board, staff, and other sections through collaboration, active communication, and providing time and commitment to shared initiatives.
To engage with members of the Cryosphere Sciences section in executing AGU’s strategic plan, I will prioritize open dialogue with section members. This will include continuing regular monthly meetings with the Executive Committee, informal and formal member surveys, engaging through social media, and starting Annual Meeting 'office hours'. I will support and promote new and ongoing efforts related to early career involvement, increased support for underrepresented groups, transparency in decision making, inclusivity and diversity, providing excellent candidates to be considered for section and AGU Honors, and ensuring that our section’s activities align with AGU’s strategic priorities.
