Training the Next Generation of Science Advocates
Voices for Science trains scientists to communicate the value of Earth and space sciences to key decision makers, journalists, and public audiences. Scientists will participate in outcomes-focused outreach to make a tangible impact at the local, federal, or global level.
Through the Voices for Science program, scientists interested in science communication and policy outreach will receive specialized training to hone their skills and connect with a cohort of scientist peers. Throughout the twelve-month program, participants work directly with AGU staff to conduct regular outreach activities with a variety of audiences.
- A commitment of at least one outreach activity per month for a twelve-month period, which ideally entails working towards a larger outreach goal.
- An in-depth in-person training workshop in Washington, D.C. on 29-30 September 2025 for Americas-based participants, or a virtual training session (dates TBD) for participants based outside of the Americas. AGU will provide travel and lodging assistance for those attending in person.
- Meeting with legislators’ offices in Washington, DC during the workshop for Americas-based participants.
- Serving as a role model for others interested in science communication and policy.
- Participating in Voices for Science activities at AGU's annual meeting during the year of Voices for Science participation.
- Complimentary registration fees for AGU's annual meeting the year the honor is awarded.
- Access to small grants to support outreach work.
- Recognition of their work by AGU leadership.
How it Works
Around 20 Fellows will be accepted for the 2025-2026 cohort. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate an aptitude for science communications and policy, with a strong desire to engage with a variety of audiences and to speak out about the importance of Earth and space sciences. We are accepting applications globally for the 2025-2026 cohort, and we encourage all applicants to have a specific outreach goal in mind when they apply.
Applications will open on 1 May 2025 for the September 2025-August 2026 cohort year. Please check back then! If you’d like to receive an email when the application is open, you can sign up for monthly AGU SCIENCE POLICY ALERTS.
