Training the Next Generation of Science Advocates
Voices for Science trains scientists to communicate the value and impact of Earth and space sciences to key decision makers, journalists, and public audiences. The program recruits scientists to participate in one of two tracks: policy or communications.
The Voices for Science program provides scientists interested in science communications and outreach with specialized training to hone their skills. Throughout the twelve-month program, participants work directly with AGU staff to conduct regular outreach activities with a variety of audiences in their local communities.
Due to internal capacity, we can only consider applications from scientists located in certain areas of the globe; these vary from the communications to policy track. Please read each application form for details.
- A written commitment to conduct outreach activities.
- A minimum of one outreach activity per month for a twelve-month period, or a series of activities that culminate in an outreach project.
- An in-depth in-person training session in Washington, D.C. in April 2024 for US- and Canada-based participants or virtually for EU- and UK-based participants. AGU will provide travel and lodging assistance.
- Meet with legislators’ offices in Washington, DC (US-based Policy track).
- Serve as a role model for others interested in science communication and policy.
- Participation in Voices for Science activities at AGU's annual meeting during the year of Voices for Science participation.
- Complimentary registration fees for AGU's annual meeting or for EGU’s General Assembly the year the honor is awarded.
How it Works
During the application process, applicants will apply to either the policy or communications track. indicate their interest in the policy or communications track. Around 20 Fellows are accepted into each track. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate an aptitude for science communications and a strong desire to engage with a variety of audiences and to speak out about the importance of Earth and space sciences.
