Nicolas Gruber is recognized for his efforts to tackle some of the most important challenges associated with ocean biogeochemical cycles and their interactions with the Earth system, continuously pushing the frontiers of our knowledge in biogeochemistry, oceanography and climate change. He has transformed global ocean carbon science with innovative modeling and observational assessment method development, especially with respect to anthropogenic and isotopic carbon in the ocean.

Like Roger Revelle, Niki Gruber’s vision and insights have had a huge impact on the global carbon cycle community. Our understanding of the role of the ocean in the global carbon cycle would not be where it is today without him. Also, like Roger Revelle, Niki Gruber has been a proactive leader in the international community, organizing and inspiring generations of young scientists to better understand ocean carbon cycling and its role in climate change. He is constantly urging the community to push the boundaries of our understanding with provocative and forward-thinking ideas at international meetings and using models to challenge what we can discover with observations.
