Recognizing Early Career Scientists
The Hisashi Kuno Award is presented annually to an early career scientist for outstanding contributions to the fields of volcanology, geochemistry, and petrology. It is named to honor the life and work of Hishashi Kuno, an exceptional volcanologist and petrologist of the mid-twentieth century. Successful nominees are no more than seven years past the completion of their Ph.D. or highest terminal degree by the the beginning of the year in which the award is presented.
- An award Certificate
- Recognition at AGU's annual meeting during the award presentation year
About the Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology Section
The chemical and physical evolution of rocks and minerals, particularly igneous and metamorphic rocks, falls under the purview of the Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology Section. Because of the Section’s interest in studying and mitigating the hazards of volcanoes, its work has a direct bearing on public safety and the preservation of life.
Research topics that dominate the Section include isotope and trace element geochemistry, the origin of igneous rocks, metamorphism, volcanology, magma dynamics, and new geochemical methods of research. Though the research interests of VGP members are diverse, they strive to solve cross-disciplinary problems within an effective framework and to make the results of that research widely available.
Eligibility
- an active AGU member
- an early-career scientist no more than seven years past completion of their Ph.D. or highest terminal degree by the start of the year in which the award will be presented
