CV Best Practices Workshop Part 1: Surveying the Current Landscape
It is often assumed that curriculum vitae (CVs) provide complete and accurate information about an individual’s academic preparation, skills, competencies, and experience, but this may not always be true. CVs can include errors, omissions, or misrepresentations that may lead hiring managers to focus only on grades, institutional affiliations, or work experience. CVs tend to favor those with awareness of educational and professional development opportunities, thereby leading to inequalities and inequities. Questions discussed include:
- In light of digital tools/resources that are currently available to showcase an individual’s experience and accomplishments, what is the purpose of CVs/resumes?
- What are the current expectations of CVs/resumes from academia, agencies, NGOs and industry?
- What are current metrics that are used to evaluate CVs/resumes?

- Do hiring committees and managers currently consider “outside the box” metrics to engage in a holistic review of the needs for the team/job and the candidate?
- What improvements are needed in CV/resume evaluation criteria and processes? How do we change perspectives and practices in grant proposal reviews as well as academic, agency, NGO and industry hiring? How will this evolving information communicated to job seekers?

Mental Resilience When Facing Climate Change and Compassion Fatigue
Climate change has impacts that are far reaching and contribute to increased disasters and the subsequent chronic stressors. As the number and magnitude of climate related disasters increase, so does the burden on communities in constant recovery mode. Subsequently we are faced with an international crisis of many professionals and industries impacted by burnout. Professionals who perform critical and often dangerous and exhausting work daily are particularly at risk for compassion fatigue and decreased overall wellbeing. This presentation will discuss findings where disaster experiences and community disruptions contribute to compassion fatigue and related mental health problems. By highlighting risk, we emphasize and offer a plan for the health, mental health, and protection of these professionals that include compassion fatigue resiliency training. If you want to share your science with your city council, state senators, or even Presidential candidates, the approach is the same. Come learn how to effectively message to policymakers at this workshop. While the focus will be on U.S. policymakers, many of these tools can be used in other countries and we encourage attendees from any location. Add this event to your schedule.
