Welcome to the Press Center

Free registration is available to working members of the press for the purpose of gathering news and information to produce media coverage of the Ocean Science Meeting. Press registration will remain open through the end of the conference on Friday, 23 February. Review our press credentialing requirements.

The on-site press room is located on the second floor of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, room 212.

Ocean Sciences Meeting 2024 is primarily an in-person event, with an online-only scientific session on Wednesday morning, 21 February. Audio and slide presentations from in-person oral sessions will be recorded and made available to registered attendees after the close of the meeting. Reporters may request expedited access to recordings of specific presentations. OSM24 Media Relations will live-stream all press events and take questions from remote reporters.

Setting the PACE: Scientists ready to investigate oceans with new NASA satellite

Tuesday, 20 February, 10:00 a.m. Central Time

NASA’s Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) satellite launched into orbit earlier this month, where it will use the vantage point of space to study microscopic life in the oceans and microscopic particles in the atmosphere. Scientists are ready to dive into the data: At this panel, several researchers will discuss how PACE measurements of ocean color will help study fisheries, identify harmful algal blooms, and monitor the health of ocean ecosystems in a changing climate.

Climate interventions and our oceans – ask us anything

Tuesday, 20 February, 2:00 p.m. Central Time

The oceans are both critical elements regulating Earth’s climate and ecosystems vulnerable to the effects of climate change caused by overuse of carbon-based fuels. Climate interventions, including stratospheric aerosol injection, cloud brightening and ocean-based carbon dioxide removal strategies, are gaining attention and investment. What is ocean-based carbon dioxide removal? What are potential benefits, limitations and risks of these approaches? How should applications be regulated? Join our expert panel to discuss these questions and more about future impacts of climate intervention efforts on our oceans.

Using shipwrecks to explore changing coasts and oceans

Thursday, 22 February, 11:00 a.m. Central Time

Between climate change, sea level rise, and anthropogenic pressures, the world’s coastlines are evolving rapidly — and the Mississippi River Delta is no exception. Scientists from a range of disciplines are using shipwrecks to track how the Mississippi Delta and other coastlines are changing, bringing together archaeology, geology, ecology, and more. Panelists at this roundtable will discuss how shipwreck science has evolved over the last 50 years, explore case studies around the Mississippi, and look ahead to how shipwreck research can help us manage “ocean sprawl” and our changing oceans.
